Descrizione

uogosanto is a small ancient village immersed in a woodland in the heart of Gallura. Its name is the Italian translation from the Sardinian-Corsican language spoken in the area, Locusantu and it's due to the presence of a hermitage dating back to the Early Christianity, a shrine to the Virgin Mary, a Franciscan conventand dozens of rural churches. But its origin is even more ancient, as shown by the Nuragic structures that visitors can admire on the granitic hill protecting the town's houses from the mistral wind. Luogosanto also played an important role during the Middle Ages; this role is testified by the ruins of old castles, villas and churches scattered in its vast territory. The village lays along three neighbourhoods around the Basilica of Our Lady Of Locusantu, each of them being marked by the typical architecture of Gallura with its natural stone walls. Luogosanto is surrounded by a dynamic landscape of great charm and natural and cultural value, full of holm and cork oak forests, wild-olive trees, Mediterranean scrub and also vineyards and pastures, interlaced with monumental rocks shaped by the nature and dotted with 200 old stazzi, the traditional farming houses that still organize the economy of inner Gallura.
